Science Photo Walk at Helmholtz Center Berlin

The Helmholz Centre for Materials and Energy is a research institute established from the former Hahn-Meitner-Institut (HMI) and the Berliner Elektronenspeicherring-Gesellschaft für Synchrotronstrahlung (BESSY). The press office invited to a Science Photo Walk and my friend Boris and me have been lucky enough to get a space. Institute coworkers showed us some labs on the Adlershof campus and we also gained access to the actual synchrotron hall. Although I have never measured anything in there during my PhD time, I have been there before and everything was still quite familiar. Synchrotron radiation is vey well suited for bio-crystallography and of major importance for my research (even though I did my main measurements at DESY Hamburg and EMBL Grenoble).

Over several hours, approx. 60 people had the opportunity to take pictures of labs and researchers that would possibly be used in official press material of the Helmholtz Centre. See my own entries in the slide show above and the winning photos here. You may notice that Boris indeed had a top 10 photo (and one in the top 20). And I had one positive surprise coming for me as well. Without having a clue, I did see one of my photos being presented in the photo exhibition as a top 20 photo too! This is it:
